“5 Covert Persuasion Triggers…..”

Like it or not, you are considered a compliance professional because you are running an online business and most of the time, you are telling people to buy stuff or take some form of action like entering an email or a zip code.

We shall continue from the previous post and take a look at another 5 time-tested proven persuasion triggers and see how you can use them specifically to put more profits into your pocket.

Persuasion Trigger #5: Stories

Let me tell you a story….. in the beginning, before mankind started writing on stone or paper, all they did was tell stories. As simple as it sounds, stories are powerful and almost hypnotic. Did I just tell you a story?

The bible for example is full of stories and you can learn a lot from these stories, I am sure you can remember at least a few stories from the bible, David slaying Goliath, Moses parting the red sea, Noah and his arc, Jesus and his countless miracles of healing.

Stories are simple, conversational, friendly, comfortable, easy to absorb, easy to understand and easy to remember, so use it whenever you can. Use them in your sales copy, your blog posts, your emails and more.

Persuasion Trigger #6: Authority

Authority does not always mean blue uniform, it can come in a form of expert status. For example, if you are an author of some book, people would consider you as an authority in your field.

If you appeared in the media, like television, radio, newspapers, magazines or some publications, people automatically associate you as an expert or authority in your market place.

When you are very experienced or well-known in a certain field, you can be seen as an authority. People tend to believe whatever experts say because experts know what they are doing or they appear to know what they are doing!

Some people abuse this by showing irrelevant authority. For example, you see actors who act as doctors showing up in ads as doctors recommending some product! These guys did not go to medicine school! This is deceptive advertising!

Persuasion Trigger #7: Scarcity

If you do not read my blog post it will disappear in 3 seconds, if you do not buy my product, it will be sold out in the next 2 minutes….. how many times have you heard people say that kind of nonsense?

They want to make their product look very time limited so that you will be persuaded to buy right now instead of later. However, the way most people do it, they are simply lying and their audience can smell the stench of their lies!

Maybe the information you are selling is highly confidential and you only want few people to know it. Who knows you might only have a limited quantity of your products being stocked. Perhaps you are having a time limited special sale.

Scarcity tactics will cause people to have the urge to buy now, it is powerful so do not abuse it. Use it carefully so that you are not lying to people and making them look stupid.

Persuasion Trigger #8: Reason Why

Reason why is such an important trigger because without a reason to do something nobody will bother to do anything at all, right? The word because is so powerful because it connects a reason to an action.

If you give people enough good reasons to do something, they will do it! If for every 1 logical reason, you give 2 emotion reasons to support it, your power to persuade will be stronger.

From now on, every time you ask someone to do something, give them a reason and you will see more people agree with you. The more valid your reason or reasons, the better it works.

Have you heard this….. make your bed, brush your teeth, wash your face, eat your vegetables because I am your mom! (or mum) Sounds very familiar, right?

Persuasion Trigger #9: Curiosity

Curiosity kills the cat! Fortunately, you are not a cat! This 1 single factor could be the most power psychological trigger of all, which is the reason why I chose to put it right at the end.

Newspapers and magazines headlines that get people curious are usually the ones that sell well. Anything controversial, unusual or even strange will cause curiosity.

I guess many people are so bored with their lives that anything that makes them curious gets their attention. Think about it this way, if you cannot get the attention of others, all other persuasion triggers will have no chance to take place, right?

Based on personal experience, my pay per click ads with the highest click through rates are those that cause some level of curiosity. Squeeze pages cause you to be curious enough to enter your email even when you may not know the person behind it.

Persuasion Summary

Use these triggers to get the attention of people first before getting them do what you tell them to do. Make sure what you tell them to do or buy will only benefit them if not, you are nothing but a big fat liar. We do not need more of such liars!

To get the best results and turn almost everything to your favor, combine more than 1 trigger and use them all in a row. Trust me, you will see better results than you expect.

Last but not least, these persuasion or influence triggers are extremely powerful, use them to serve people, not to exploit them.
