A good example is when you buy a burger at McDonalds, they ask if you want to make it a meal. When you order a meal, they ask if you want to upsize your meal.

If you happen to have a product with 2 versions, basic and deluxe or maybe you have 3 versions, basic, deluxe and super deluxe, your upsell appears more like a choice than an upsell. If you want to offer a related but different product, maybe you can put it on your thank you page.

Have you ever experienced an upsell hell? Right after you made a purchase, when you are about to access what you just bought, there is an upsell, followed by another and another and another…..

I once had an experience where I had to go through about 5 video upsells before I could finally reach my actual thank you page! I am not naming the guilty party and I have forgiven him since his product was pretty good.

Personally, I would prefer to upsell someone after they got access to what they just paid for. Also, I prefer to upsell or downsell about once or twice rather than multiple times which is just too much for people to bear.
